I have heard that immediate messages through AOL/Yahoo/MSN may be read by code hackers that “sniff” the communications making my system. Is this real?

Information traveling on a system like the internet is seen by many people other devices. Regional devices linked using a hub, as an example, all understand data being delivered to and from the rest of the devices linked to the same hub.
